Help return Eagar to the people...

Let me tell you a story:

Pedro, a village resident, builds a small shed on his land.  He wants to keep his tools out of the weather.  Tools are expensive, and Pedro has little money.  Soon after he completes his shed, an official from the village comes to visit Pedro.  He demands Pedro give him money because Pedro built the shed without permission.  If he does not give the official the money, the official can have Pedro put in prison for months, or even years.

Does this sound like a story from some banana republic?  Perhaps from Venezuela or Cuba?  Well folks, these laws are right here in Eagar, and Pedro could be any one of us that builds that shed on our own property.  If you build or buy even a 15’x15’ shed on your land without buying a permit from the town of Eagar, according to Eagar municipal code you are guilty of a Class II misdemeanor (Eagar Code 15.08.170).  In Arizona, a Class II misdemeanor carries a punishment of up to 4 months in prison and a $750 dollar fine.  And you can be charged with a separate offense for each day of a violation.  The unelected building official has the power to have a police officer arrest you (Eagar Code 15.04.280).  So if that shed is on your land without a permit for 3 days, you could go to prison for a year and pay thousands in fines!  These are the municipal codes currently in place in the town of Eagar where even simple violations of any of the hundreds of municipal codes carry criminal penalties.   They were adopted by the town council and mayor and are enforced by unelected officials to provide cover for the council and mayor.  How did we come to a situation like this in a small rural town in Arizona?

What we need in Eagar are a few well considered rules to enhance the town, not hundreds of pages of rules with criminal penalties for the citizens.  We need a few regulations enforced with common sense and consideration for our lovely rural community and the residents, not big city rules, numerous high fees, and criminal penalties.  What happened to a government for the people?

Help us change these rules.  Attend town council meetings, get on the agenda to contest these codes.  Run for council office, run for mayor.  Contact us.  We live in Eagar, and are willing to help however we can with this grass roots effort to return the town of Eagar to the people of Eagar.  If the residents of Eagar demand justice with a single voice they will be heard.
